I know I’ve said this a bagillion times, but I’m starting a 365 on my 21st birthday.

I’ve graduated and have no excuses.

“Take this, all of you, and eat of it:
for this is my body which will be given up for you.
Take this, all of you, and drink from it:
for this is the chalice of my blood,
the blood of the new and eternal covenant.
which will be poured out for you and for many
for the forgiveness of sins .
Do this in memory of me.”

Or as my sister used to say…”When do get to eat the chip dad?”

"Ultimately, it would seem you’re no different from those you profess to despise: You just wanted something for yourself. Something to make you feel better as you watch the end approach."

I haven’t shot digital in a while.
And I mean REALLY shot digital.
Shot something I wanted to shoot rather than needed to shoot.
I always felt self-portraits were therapeutic.
And I’m in need of therapy.
This is the roughest its been in 3 years.

I had a great conversation with my roomie last night. About religion and God and what this thing is all about. I finished reading the Introduction to Ayn Rand’s book Fountainhead. And I’ve been craving to reread the article in TIME magazine.

Adding all that came at me this past week, I’ve got some new thoughts running around my mind.

Religion. And I want to start at the mere linguistic existence of the word. The word Religion. For me, it’s hard to distinguish if words mean everything or nothing. I’m a de constructer and perhaps too often of one. The word Religion means nothing. It’s a form that was created as a means of communication. Of survival. Just because a word is written does not imply it has meaning. In this sense, I believe words are nothing.

However, when a word is thrown into society, ANY society, meaning is created. This is because we as humans are curious and meaning-hungry. We try and extract meaning from every little thing in life. And I am in no way, shape, or form negating this a bad thing to do, but it does pose problems in life whether personally or collectively. Because we try and extract meaning from every word, there are an infinite number of possible extractions. These extractions of course being created in the cultural context of its creation. In this sense, I believe words are everything.

So, when it comes to the word Religion, I dislike everything it currently is, how it has come to be that way, and how I personally think of the word due to the historical, cultural, and philosophical implications it holds.

When we think of the word Religion (as I’ve mentioned in an earlier post this week) we automatically think of it as being connected to God. But not just connected. We think of the two words almost inseparable. I like to think of it this way: squares and polygons. Every square is a polygon, but not every polygon is a square. Every religion finds themselves with a God, but not every God would like to be paired with a religion.

I watched this video last night and I’d like to say that one of the most legitimate things that was said was that Jesus would hate religion. You should watch this video if you haven’t already.

[Why I Love Jesus, but Hate Religion]

I don’t agree with everything said in it, but I have pulled some thoughts from the video…

Religion is purely political. Just as many things in life. It was all one until some asshole got power hungry and wanted to be an idol. Wanted to be looked up to. Wanted to be the best. So he put a new name on his/her beliefs, took advantage of some lost souls, and thus religion was born aka competitive religion aka mine are better than yours aka complete bullshit founded on greedy intentions.

*reminder to self- you want to talk more about sin…but you need to think about it first*

And I don’t think that’s what anyone would have wanted. Whether you believe in God, god, it, something, the creator…list goes on. I don’t think any of this religious stuff was supposed to morph into a competition of you vs me based on what we believe. I think it was supposed to bring us all together. And because of the power hungry people throughout the worlds timeline, we’ve been formed into thinking of religion as a horrible thing, just as I currently do.

Oh wait, I’m going to digress. I’ve also been thinking a lot about what we think and what gives us the ability to think these things. It’s quite strange to think that our thoughts might not be our own. If what we think is based off what we know and what we know is based off what our society allows us to see, doesn’t that mean there is a world of possible ideas we are not being allowed to see or think. And if so, is there a way to break free and find those thoughts? If any are there? And if they are not there, WHY are they not there. Is it because they were not there to begin with? Or is it because we have neglected them for so long that they have withered away and died?…

Anyways, I think I’ve gone too far off topic to pull myself back in.

I’ll write later…
